How to read the Thailand Livability Index

TLI scores all 77 Thai provinces on 30 indicators across 7 independent categories, then combines the category scores into a single 0–100 livability score per province. This page is the short read for first-time visitors. The longer read is on methodology.

What the score is

Every Thai province carries one composite score and seven category scores, all on the same 0–100 scale. A composite of 70 means the province is in good shape across the seven dimensions; 40 means meaningful gaps in one or more of them; 0 means at least one category is at the floor.

Scores are absolute, not relative. A score of 60 on an indicator means the value sits at the methodology's "good" benchmark, not that the province scored better than 60% of other provinces. The benchmarks come from international standards where they exist (World Health Organization air-quality guidelines, the United Nations Human Development Report) and from the Thai provincial distribution where they do not.

Why some provinces score 0

The composite uses a across the seven categories rather than a simple average. The mathematical property that matters: if any single category scores 0, the composite is held at 0. A province with excellent transit and dangerous air does not average out to "fine."

This is a deliberate methodological choice called non-substitutability. Categories are not substitutes for each other. An exceptionally clean environment does not make up for an absent healthcare system. The geometric mean encodes that judgment in the math.

How to read a province page

The province page opens with the composite score, the rank among 77 provinces, and a band label (Very Low through Very High). Below the score is the per-category breakdown: each category score with its indicators expandable. Each indicator card shows the raw value, the normalized 0–100 score, the source, and the AS OF date.

Two callouts sit further down on selected pages: the FIRMS supplementary block (active-fire detections held out of the composite to avoid double-counting against PM2.5) and a regional comparison FAQ. The "Beyond the score" section surfaces signals that carry information but do not enter the composite by design.
