Indicators
TLI's composite is built from 30 indicators across 7 independent categories. Each indicator has a transparent definition, a documented source, fixed scoring goalposts, and a province-by-province distribution. Click into any indicator to see its full methodology, source provenance, and which Thai provinces score highest and lowest.
Goalposts anchor the 0-to-100 score: a low value that scores zero and a high value that scores 100, with linear interpolation between (two indicators use a parabolic curve where a mid-range value is best). Goalposts follow international guidelines where they exist (WHO for air quality, the WHO/UNICEF JMP service ladder for piped water), and the observed Thai provincial distribution where they do not. The methodology page documents the framework; each indicator page below carries its own band and rationale.
How TLI scoring works
- Raw value
- The measurement in the indicator's own units — μg/m³ for PM2.5, beds per 1,000 residents for hospital capacity, percent for forest cover. Units sit under each indicator name and on the indicator detail page.
- Score 0–100
- A normalization of the raw value against fixed methodology goalposts. Not a percentile — a province scoring 60 means it sits at the "good" benchmark, not 60% of provinces. Higher is always better; indicators where lower-is-better in raw terms (e.g. PM2.5, conflict events) are inverted by the goalposts so the scored direction is consistent.
- Bands
-
The five bands carry fixed colors used everywhere on the site (score chips,
province cards, the homepage map, search results, the indicator distribution charts).
A province scoring 78 will appear in sage green on every surface; a province scoring
22 will appear in terracotta on every surface.
- 0–19 poor (brick)
- 20–39 weak (terracotta)
- 40–59 mixed (amber)
- 60–79 good (sage)
- 80–100 strong (deep green)
- Composite
- The seven category scores combine via geometric mean — so a province scoring 0 in any single category is honestly floored at 0 overall, not averaged away. Within each category, indicators carry weights between 0.5 and 1.0 (headline = 1.0, cross-validation companion = 0.5).
